Phaco Training: Differentiating Corneal Dendrites from Psuedo-Dendrites

By | August 29, 2020

Characteristics of True Dendrites:

  1. Usually centrally located

2. Linear branching with central ulceration staining with fluorescein

3. Terminal bulbs and swollen borders present

Still, not every true dendrite should be assumed to be a Herpes Simplex Keratitis

Pseudo-dendrites are almost always non-HSV

  1. HZO – Absence of terminal buds, smaller in size and elevated without central ulceration
  2. Contact Lens Wear – Disappear on discontinuation
  3. Recurrent corneal Ulcer due to Cogan’s Microcystic Dystrophy
  4. Post traumatic corneal abrasion
